Scholarship worth and components:

The scholarships have a value between $100 and 5000 USD (with the possibility of receiving a Critical Need Language Award up to 8000 USD). The scholarship must be used to pay for approved study or internship expenditures abroad. Scholars are chosen through a competitive selection process. Included in these expenses are tuition, board and lodging, books, local transportation, insurance, overseas airfare, and passport and visa fees. The ultimate award amount for a Gilman Scholar will be based on their financial need, programme length, overall programme costs, and the quality of their application.

Eligibility:

The Gilman Scholarship is only available once to each recipient. If a student has previously turned down the Gilman Scholarship, they are welcome to do so again as long as they still match all criteria, which are as follows:

A citizen of the United States;

• An undergraduate student enrolled in good standing at a 2-year or 4-year approved institution of higher learning in the United States;
• Having a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or demonstrating that they will have one during the duration of their internship or study abroad programme;
•  Currently applying for or accepted into a study abroad or internship programme that awards academic credit. Prior to award payment, programme acceptance documentation is needed;
• Making an application for credit-bearing study abroad programmes in a nation or region that has a Travel Advisory System overall Level 1 or 2 rating. Students will not be permitted to travel to select locations inside these nations or regions that the Travel Advisory has identified as “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) destinations. Additionally, students are not permitted to submit applications for programmes in a nation or region that has a global Level 3 or 4 Travel Advisory.

The U.S. Department of State reserves the right to ask for programme modifications for certain nations or regions if it is thought essential at any point during the application, selection, or programme phases. Final awards are subject on funding availability, as well as the safety and security conditions in a given nation or place. Furthermore, should the nation’s or location’s security or health situation change, it can have an impact on a Gilman Scholar’s position.

Application Guidelines:

During the spring, summer, autumn, winter or academic year terms, students have the option of studying and interning abroad.

For applicants whose in-person programmes or internships begin between 1 December 2023 and 31 October 2024, the October 2023 Deadline application will open in mid-August 2023. This cycle includes the academic year 2024–2025 as well as the Winter or January term 2024, Spring 2024, Maymester 2024, Summer 2024, and Fall 2024 programmes. On Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, applications must be submitted.

For applicants whose in-person programmes or internships begin between 1 May 2024 and 30 April 2025, the March 2024 Deadline application will open in mid-January 2024. This cycle includes programmes or internships for Maymester 2024, Summer 2024, Fall 2024, Academic Year 2024–2025, and Spring 2025. The application window closes on March 7, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific.
