They will become fluent in various languages and cultures, which is crucial for their academic and professional development. The programme aims to inspire students to study and intern in various nations and places around the world. The curriculum also promotes language learning among pupils, particularly for critical need languages (those deemed crucial for national security).

Host Institution(s):

Universities and organisations outside the US.

Level/Field(s) of study:

Study abroad and internships programs

Number of Scholarships:

About 3,000

Target group:

Americans with modest financial means who choose to study or intern abroad.

Scholarship worth and components:

The scholarships have a value between $100 and 5000 USD (with the possibility of receiving a Critical Need Language Award up to 8000 USD). The scholarship must be used to pay for approved study or internship expenditures abroad. Scholars are chosen through a competitive selection process. Included in these expenses are tuition, board and lodging, books, local transportation, insurance, overseas airfare, and passport and visa fees. The ultimate award amount for a Gilman Scholar will be based on their financial need, programme length, overall programme costs, and the quality of their application.

Eligibility:

The Gilman Scholarship is only available once to each recipient. If a student has previously turned down the Gilman Scholarship, they are welcome to do so again as long as they still match all criteria, which are as follows:

A citizen of the United States;

The U.S. Department of State reserves the right to ask for programme modifications for certain nations or regions if it is thought essential at any point during the application, selection, or programme phases. Final awards are subject on funding availability, as well as the safety and security conditions in a given nation or place. Furthermore, should the nation’s or location’s security or health situation change, it can have an impact on a Gilman Scholar’s position.
